Flip Electronics Manufacturing Services - FAQs

Q: What is Flip Electronics Manufacturing Services?

A: Flip Electronics Manufacturing Services (FMS) is a fully authorized manufacturer of semiconductor components that are in the latter stages of their lifecycle. Under an authorized agreement with the original component manufacturer (OCM), FMS provides datasheet compliant products using the OCM’s original intellectual property.

Q: Who should I contact for further information on FMS?

A: You can contact Flip at [email protected], your Flip Electronics sales representative, or an existing Ampleon products Distribution partner.

Q: Why has the OCM discontinued the product in the first place and why are they working with FMS?

A: There are a variety of reasons why an OCM might decide to discontinue a product—these can include declining sales, reduced profitability, or manufacturing obsolescence. Despite these factors, OCMs often choose to work with FMS to ensure an ongoing supply of product for end customers who want to avoid a costly product redesign or the need for a last time buy (LTB).

Q: Are parts identical to the OCM’s specifications?

A: Yes, all electrical parameters meet the OCM’s datasheet and specifications, ensuring the parts are identical to those originally produced by the OCM.

Q: Are these devices an emulation of the original product?

A: No, the product is not an emulation—it is identical to the original device. All electrical parameters are the same, and the silicon is fabricated in the same foundry using the OCM’s mask set. The OCM’s original test program is used for validation, and the product is assembled using the same process flow as the original device.

Q: Will I need to perform any qualification testing on the products?

A: Qualification is often minimized because FMS uses original intellectual property from the OCM. Additionally, part numbers remain consistent between the OCM and FMS, helping reduce the need for extensive requalification efforts.

Q: What is provided by the OCM to FMS to continue manufacturing the product?

A: The OCM provides FMS with a license agreement and full authorization to build a form, fit, and functionally compliant product. This includes all necessary manufacturing software, hardware, and tooling, as well as any product inventory the OCM has on hand at the time of FMS authorization.

Q: Will there be any change to the part marking?

A: Yes. If parts currently carry a Resurgent Manufacturing Services logo, this will change to a Flip Electronics Manufacturing Services logo. However, part numbers and other marking formats will remain the same. If the parts do not currently carry an RMS logo, there will be no change to the marking.

Q: Can I still place orders with RMS, and will there be any changes to invoicing?

A: Yes, you can continue placing purchase orders with RMS or choose to transition to FMS. Invoices will now show Flip Electronics Manufacturing Services as the billing entity.

Q: Will POs issued to FMS require changes?

A: No. You may continue issuing POs to Resurgent Manufacturing Services, or you can issue them directly to Flip Manufacturing Services. In either case, invoices from FMS will list Flip Manufacturing Services as the billing party.

Q: Is anything changing besides the name?

A: Just the name—same expertise, same mission. FMS will continue to address the semiconductor industry’s obsolescence challenges by ensuring the long-term availability of critical legacy components.

Q: How does FMS address the challenges of shortened component life cycles caused by technological advancements and industry consolidation?

A: FMS partners with original manufacturers to extend production using identical tooling and technologies, delivering fully datasheet compatible products.

Q: What kind of replacements does FMS provide for original components?

A: FMS offers true 1:1 drop-in replacements authorized and licensed by the original manufacturer—not emulations. These replacements ensure identical in form, fit, and function according to the original data sheet, which often helps reduce or even eliminate qualification costs.

Q: How does FMS ensure the reliability and performance of its products?

A: FMS uses the original test programs, intellectual property, and manufacturing processes to produce wafers and assemblies that integrate seamlessly, delivering reliable performance just like the original components.

Q: How does FMS fit into Flip Electronics’ core mission to provide innovative solutions for managing obsolete and end-of-life (EOL) semiconductor components?

A: FMS supports Flip Electronics’ mission by offering extended-life manufacturing and comprehensive EOL planning services. This integration enhances our ability to provide authorized, reliable solutions that help customers manage obsolete and end-of-life semiconductor components effectively, ensuring continuous access to critical parts and tailored supply chain support.

Q: What is "The Gap" and why is it a problem for customers?

A: "The Gap" refers to the challenges customers face when obsolescence events force them to make unplanned product decisions. This can disrupt their operations and lead to various issues depending on the approach they take.

Q: What are the historical approaches to dealing with "The Gap," and what problems do they present?

A: In the past, customers have used methods like alternative sourcing, which can lead to counterfeit or poor-quality parts from the grey market despite approved options. Last time buy purchases come with high costs and the tough task of guessing the right quantity. Redesigns, whether a new PCB, a moderate change, or a full system replacement, bring challenges like limited resources, high expenses, and re-certification needs. Finally, discontinuing the product can upset customers and cause revenue loss.

Q: What is the modern approach or improved solution to "The Gap" offered by Flip Electronics Manufacturing Services?

A: FMS offers a modern solution that avoids the pitfalls of traditional methods. This approach includes no need to change product strategy, ensuring a continuous, long-term supply of quality, authorized products with minimal up-front expenses. It eliminates the need for redesigns or requalification, boosts end-customer satisfaction, and supports revenue continuation, making it a smoother and more reliable option for customers.
